What are spent grains?

During the brewing process, barley and oats is steeped in hot water to release sugar which results in spent or disposed grains. Normally these spent grains go to farms as animal feed or to landfills as waste. They are, however, too good and healthy to be wasted.

For instance, barley is full of protein and fibre, and combined with other delicious local ingredients like apples, pumpkin, eggs and honey, it makes a tasty and nature-friendly dog biscuit packed with nutrients and vitamins.

Heather, a Red Seal pastry chef by trade and owner of a local brewery, began to develop recipes to use the spent grains from the brewing process. Together with her longtime friend Barb, they launched Brew’ed Biscuits in 2018.

Whether you’re looking to reduce your pet’s planetary pawprint, improve your dog’s diet, or just want to spoil your dog with tasty treats, you can feel good about giving Brew’ed Biscuits to your dog.

Our Spent Grain Apple Cinnamon biscuits are made using:

  • Locally grown and harvested orchard apples from The Cider Keg
  • Harmony Hives all-natural unpasteurized honey
  • Arnolds Eggs from the Simcoe Farmers Market
  • Brown Rice Flour, Oat Flour and Cinnamon.

Why apples?

Apples can help keep a dog’s teeth clean and breath fresh. A tasty treat for those close-up kisses!

Are eggs okay for my dog to eat?

Eggs are a great source of very digestible protein, riboflavin, and selenium. For some dogs that are prone to digestive upset, eggs can give them a little protein boost.
